Gmail, hidden emails?

I have been sent several emails that do not show in my inbox, they are not in spam, social of anywhere I can find them.
If I search for them by sender they appear with an inbox symbol but they are not in the inbox!
Where are they hiding? Plus how can I prevent this in future?

I personally find Gmail useless because of the vagaries of categorisation, but I think you should find those in the "Priority Inbox"1

if you sent them they will be in 'SENT' and 'ALL MAIL'0

They are not emails I have sent, they are emails sent to me and I have not replied to them as I had not seen them.0
