Santanders solution....give the card to a "friend" and get them to withdraw cash- which I don't need. And this is their idea of security?
If you can prove that somebody from Santander has said this make a written complaint pointing out that this is against everything banks tell you about card security (as you have already said) and see what Santander's reply is to that, my guess is that they will not withdraw your debit card.

If at first you don't succeed, sky diving is not for you!

I'm interested in this thread, because I too received a similar letter, and made an online transaction solely to keep the card alive - sounds like this won't actually work!
Also, giving your card and PIN to someone else is gross negligence and I can't believe they would have suggested you do this.
  • Further to this thread. I made a complaint to Santander about this, and this morning I received a phone call from a lady in response to my complaint. (In the mean time at Santanders suggestion, my friend withdrew some cash out for me using my card and 4 digit code.Job done...or so you would think). I explained to the lady what I had done, and as far as I was aware that was it. I explained that my friend had drawn out the cash over the counter using my card in their machine, and gave over the 4 digit code. The lady said was it a cash machine- ie a hole in the wall machine? No it was an over the counter withdrawal using the card and 4 digit code I told her. I was amazed at her reply. I'm not sure that that counts as a transaction she said. Curiouser and curiouser. The cash must have been withdrawn using the card in a cash machine, not over the counter at a bank. She said to get my friend to go to a cash machine and draw out £10...that should solve the problem. By this time I was beginning to feel I was living in a parallel universe to this bank. The saga continues. I have been with this bank for decades, since it was National Giro in fact. Don't think I'll be with them much longer.

I have literally told you twice what to do.

    Give your friend the card
Tell him to go to the shop
Use the card to buy a low value item

And twice you have ignored this.

Why your friend just didnt go to a cash machine though... 🤷‍♂️

I find it incredible that any bank would be suggesting divulging your card PIN to someone else, and then allowing them to use your card.

And if there is ever any card based fraud on the account?!

Bad suggestion and breaches the OPs agreement with the bank.

    Bad suggestion?!

Go back and read the opening post, the bank have literally told the OP to get someone to go out and use the card, either in a shop or at an ATM. His friend for some reason did neither and went and queued up inside the bank 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

This could all have been sorted for the next few years with the purchase of a pint of milk from the local shop for crying out loud.
  • If they don't renew the card in January, what are you supposed to do when you go into a branch? Isn't one of the first things the staff ask you to do is insert your debit card into the card reader so that they can take a look at your account??

I assume they bust him down to a passbook savings account type thing, or they validate his identity another way, but he doesnt go into branch anyway. He is, by his own admission, housebound.  And keeps ignoring my suggestion for his mate to just go to the shop and buy a pint of milk and put this saga to an end.

Just looked at my card, and found it expired last month and I have not received a replacement - so I can confirm that an online transaction definitely does not trigger a replacement debit card to be sent. Would have been nice if they had told me that!
