    Thanks for the replies everyone.

Back in the first quarter of this year, I decided to take a break from work.  I haven't - and don't intend to - claim any unemployment benefits.

This topic's come about because my insurance renewal is due soon and it's not even crossed my mind previously.  I want to do the right thing, but don't particularly wish to be charged 50% more in me doing so!  I'm not actively seeking employment and due to the current situation, I won't be driving around much.

I don't think I've even done 100 miles since the start of this year!

    Hi Op
Thanks for the update with new info :)
Best to call and tell them and be clear you are not on benefits.
Most will penalise you for driving less than 5k miles a year I think my OH told me when they started working from home. However, we told them we, ie me and him had access to 4 cars in our home and at times may drive our sons car as he has a big 7 seater car and we often go out long distances in his car as a family unit.
So tell them and you may be pleasantly surprised.

  • When I did mine my occupation wasn't listed so I did my best to get as close to it as possible.
They couldn't advise me what I should put just what I felt was most accurate.
I would contact them, there may be options they can select that you can't.

Just a thought - can you have an occupation without actually working?

Eg an architect is still an architect even if currently not working. Same for other professions like teacher, nurse, police officer, lorry driver, etc.

Would an insurer ever ask for proof of employment unless there was a potential conflict? I can see an issue if you're retired and it's stolen from a work car park or you're a teacher who had a crash whilst delivering pizzas. But if unemployed you are going to be doing something innocuous like going shopping or visiting relatives, so would it ever raise a flag?

How old are you?   Could you realistically be "retired"?

Otherwise if you are choosing not to work could Homemaker/House(wife/husband) fit the bill?

What are you living off, partners income, savings, investments?
I'm old enough to have accumulated some savings (hence I don't think I'm eligible for any benefits - but have always been self-sufficient), but nowhere near enough to be deemed 'retired'.
I suppose a 'homemaker' may be the closest fit, as I am managing household bills etc.

Incidently, do I need to let my mortgage provider know?

    Hi Sweetsand

Thanks again.  Interesting point on the less than 5k miles per year - I did not know that and thought it might have been a positive.

But I assume it relates to higher risk of an accident the less mileage you do?  I could be wrong though!

  • Thanks again everyone for further advice / suggestions

My Husband gets a discount on his insurance for having limited mileage.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

    Dear OP
Tell them as it's a big change according to insurance co's. If it's a big, well respected co and you tell them that you are not working for a week or two and start work in 2 weeks, they won't charge you anyhting. You have to tell them and please do not take a risk.
When you ring them, take the persons name you spoke with and the town or city they are in along with the dtae and time of the call

Nonsense, it doesn't matter what size of company and whether its well respected or not, answer the questions they as and its none of your business what town or city the employee is from especially if they are working from home.

and this post is even more nonsense, I really, really don't know why this user posts so much rubbish on the motoring board and expects people to believe them about their array of cars, size, and constant changing. As stated by someone else it is an advantage to restrict your milage per year. Think mine is 5k a year and in the 3 years I've had the car not yet hit the 5k in total.
