address has odd ebay reference in it, not GSP

Some of my ebay orders have an odd reference in the address, it starts "ebay" its like "ebayg7h2fs"
Is this some other type of collect plus or something gone wrong? The address seems to be a normal residential one rather than a shop.
Cheers.

Spoke to ebay who firstly said it is click and collect... until I pointed out that when I looked at one of the addresses on google street view it was just a house and not a click and collect location... they then said it is so that royal mail will scan the parcel and add tracking infomation. I asked how on earth that would work when I just write ebayks37sje on the bottom of a parcel how the postman is going to know to scan that, they were not sure. I suspect it only works if you buy the postage through ebay but anyhow, here is the detail in all its bizarre glory...
Following our conversation earlier, as mentioned I have gathered some more information for you regarding Royal Mail tracking and delivery events on eBay.
eBay is adding a unique eBay code to orders to improve buyers post-transaction experience by making it easier for them to see any available tracking and delivery confirmation for the parcel’s journey.
This code doesn’t impact the delivery of your parcels. The code will only be added to items posted using eligible Royal Mail UK services and where there is sufficient room on the order address to do so. In the future, this may extend to services provided by other carriers.
The unique eBay code will be included at the end of address line 2 in the eBay order and through a matching process, eBay will use this code to obtain available tracking numbers from Royal Mail.
The unique code will be in the format ebay1234abc ('ebay' + 7 alphanumeric characters) and for the majority of customers, when you generate your Royal Mail address label, it will automatically be transferred from the address into the 2D barcode on your postage label. The unique eBay code will not be printed as part of the address on the postage label.
What it means to you
Tracking and event data provided through the unique eBay code will not automatically be included in your Late Delivery Report.
If you are uploading tracking today, you should continue to do so. Uploading tracking will provide you with additional protections and give you access to the eBay premium service and discount, as long as your listings meet the eligibility criteria.
By providing a unique eBay code, this will help to identify the order as an eBay order and any available tracking will be shown to your buyer.
I trust that you are pleased with this information, to gain more knowledge on this please checkout our Announcement page in The eBay Community.
Kind regards,
Sive.

I had some of these today; the explanation makes absolutely no sense at all as one item to be sent is going via RM second class post, whereas the others are going via a tracked courier service.
If the weird eBay code isn't printed on the label then how can the parcel be matched to the code?
There's no way I'm adding these eBay codes onto the outside of my parcels. That just screams, "STEAL ME!!!"1 -
Got one of these yesterday. Thanks for the info.
I thought it was some silly system the buyer used for their own records, so I wrote it inside the envelope, but there was no way I would have written it on the outside as the poster above says!0 -
More info here - https://tamebay.com/2020/09/ebay-vtin-virtual-tracking-number-need-know.html?fbclid=IwAR0z04cU7iND1EV2SGFfWgb3Vq7Q5k7KRCydLXeg-Zkehg_EsakYSZr5o00
The author states...
”eBay won’t thank me for highlighting this, but the eVTN is specifically designed to catch parcels where sellers forgot, couldn’t be bothered, or to try and avoid eBay measuring their delivery metrics purposefully didn’t upload tracking to eBay. Royal Mail in the UK will be able to identify parcels carrying the eVTN and pass the tracking data directly to eBay regardless whether or not the seller uploaded tracking data.”2 -

For Edinburgh at least you can spot them a mile away by the way they format the address 'Edinburgh, city of'0 -

And yes, because it has "eBay" on it. I'm not the only one with this opinion.0 -
I have sold a few items on ebay recently,
I noticed that on a couple of them (2 out of the last 7) there has been a "code" in the buyers address. Something like: ebayfxk157
I just presumed these items were going via some sort of forwarding service (although the rest of the address looked normal) so added that as a line to the address and sent them.
Today I received an item that I had purchased (to my normal home address) and it had the same sort of code included on the address label so obviously that seller is getting the same thing showing at his end.
I don't know about the ones I sent out but there is no reason to have it on the one I received.
What's it for? Just an ebay glitch?

This is the eBay announcement they put on their community forum to explain it -https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Announcements/Royal-Mail-tracking-and-delivery-events-on-eBay-from-1st-Sep/ba-p/6727290 "If you use postage stamps and handwrite your label, there is no requirement for you to include the unique eBay code in the address as there is no 2D barcode and therefore, no means to provide tracking and event data. The unique eBay code should be removed from address line 2." This is what I do so for me there's no point writing the code in - only seems to be relevant if you buy postage through eBay - then they automatically include it in the 2D barcode for RM to scan.1

This has me confused.
From what I read this code is not supposed to print out on the address just included in the bar code but in fact it is printed in the address.
I also do not understand the point of it as every time I purchased post through ebay for small parcel the tracking was automatically added and updated when delivered anyway?0 -
I get the codes when a sale has took place and you view it on eBay, but when you get the PayPal email with the confirmed address it does not have the code in. So I’ve clearly been sending it with the address PayPal confirms without the code as this is what we get told to do. Had no issues.0
