Thank you for all the replies - I've taken it all onboard so thanks again.
To clarify - we found a replacement car that was 5 hours from my house and was more or less a halfway point for the buyer of my old car so we met halfway at the dealers garage.

So, the OP bought a car from a motor dealer located about 5 hours away from the OP.
The OP sold his old car as private sale to a buyer that is 10 hours away from the OP, and 5 hours away from the motor dealer where the OP is buying new car.
    Is that correct?
How on earth do you get a private car sale to someone 10-hours away?
  • If they lived at opposite ends of the country.

    someones grumpy...
the "smashed front" was a hairline crack in a chrome grill and the headlight was working fine during the 2 years we owned it and 2.5 months of the new owner being in possesion of the car.
  • This has scam written all over it

Oldest trick in the book is to try this on and try to make out the previous owner is liable for "damage" to the car after it is sold failing that they have been known to try to bully the previous owner into paying

Op - do not engage with them , block them if you can and when they realise you're not a soft touch they will move on
  • Lesson to all - buy a cheap pay as you go SIM for car sales, then bin SIM once they drive away
  • Could not agree more. My advice for selling a car privately,  get a black marker and scrub out your name and address on all the old invoices etc. Do not hand over the full v5, only the green slip. Do not give out your address when they come to view, tell them the street name and post code and to phone when they arrive, wait in the car in the road. They will be looking for the car. Do not let them plug in any diagnostic scanners in to your car. Do not feel intimidated, stick to your price. If they are more than 10mins late, cancel. The motor trade today is full is dishonest people who you should never trust by default.

Have you managed to sell a car this way ? If you came on the forum telling us your seller was doing this, I think everyone would say move onto the next car , don't touch it.
Treat everyone you meet in life with respect and trust until they do anything to hint that you cannot trust them. It's not difficult to spot the signs but the best money often comes from those who are most diligent, once they are 100% happy they pay .
