Ahh OK - I'll politely tell him to jog on then! Thank you all :)
Don't even do that. Just ignore them completely.

And probably best not to be so accommodating in driving 5 hours to drop the car off in the future.
  • Why did you drive five hours away to meet the buyer?

That's already covered in the OP. ;)

I was also buying another car at the place we met

Did the OP buy the other car from the person that bought theirs, or just from someone else nearby?

Im hoping not from the buyer but from a dealer near where they met.

Well, it is very odd as I first read the OP that they sold their car to someone 5 hours away and also purchased a car from the same people at the same place.  My first thoughts were, who was the trader?  OP or OP's buyer?

Tell them it wasnt in an accident, it's their car now and to shove their demands. You have zero liability

But that would be lying as the OP and the buyer had already noticed accident damage to the car:

They noticed some damage to the front grill surround and some further damage behind the grill - it looked like something had hit it from the front (without causing bumper damage), so not sure what had hit the car but whatever it was it must have been high off the ground and pointy as it didnt come into contact with the bumper which protrudes further forward than the grill.
They would be better off either ignoring the buyer or simply telling them that the damage was noted at the time of sale and a discount given because of it therefore any other costs incurred because of this known damage are down to them.
