Postgraduate Funding - is there any other funding available to me?

Options

Hi there,

I have recently been made redundant and have successfully secured a place for a 12 month postgraduate degree.

It’s been 10 years + since I have been back, and I have two young children that I still would need to pay for childcare. My question is: Is there any other funding available to me on top of the Postgraduate Master’s Loan? This is to help out with childcare cost, tuition fees and travelling cost.  I have looked online and all of the additional funding/grants/loans is only for undergraduate degrees, I could be wrong, but I haven’t found anything yet :(

I have my partner who I will be financially dependent on, but our household income won’t be enough for the whole 12 months. Any little help anyone can provide would be so beneficial.

Thank you for taking your time in reading this :)

  • If you are in Wales don't they have a separate grant for students? Sorry can't find the exact details so cannot confirm if it relates to Masters.
  • Hi,
Unfortunately I don't live in Wales, I live in England but studying in Wales so I don't qualify for the grants they offer to Welsh students for Masters. :(
    Thanks for replying.

    Not that I’m aware of.
I guess part-time work isn’t an option with your family and studies as well?
Fairly sure all the professional development loans have finished now.
  • I don’t think there is - out of interest, what is the masters degree in? I looked at a masters degree but ended up going another route to qualify in the role I wanted.
  • @Dr_Crypto No, part time working won't be feasible. :(
Also the Postgraduate Master's Loan is still available for this academic year. But the total amount won't see me through to the end of the year.

@SweetPotatoPie I'm doing a MSc in Statistics, so unlikely to carry out another route.

    Thanks both for replying 👍

What type of statistics are you hoping to do career wise?

I'm an applied medical statistician and don't have a MSc and did a funded PhD. There maybe other options that don't involve additional borrowing.

Sometimes you have to make difficult choices in life. You might want to study and not work, but you have children so you need to work and save up until you can afford to study.

I'm looking into Risk for the type of Statistics I want to explore further into.

What other options are you recommending that doesn't involve borrowing? I'll be happy to look into.
    Thanks.

Well, I've just been made redundant and not found a job yet plus this course is something I've always wanted to do and with the current circumstances the course is starting off online which is beneficial for me with the kids.
So I'm not asking when to do this course. I'm asking is there any other possible funding available?
It's not guaranteed for me to find a job in time, I could be unemployed for 6 months and not doing anything but instead I'm going back to study.
I do not have funding for the full year just partial, I need about 3 months to cover. So, if you know of any funding opportunities I would be grateful.

    Thanks.

Is there the opportunity to defer until next year to allow you time to find a job and save money?
