Plant identification please

Hi everyone I was given this plant a couple of months ago and it hasn't changed. I have planted it partially shaded under a tree. What type of plant is it and how can I care for it please? Big thank you in advance for any advise

  • Its a hosta. Where are the other leaves?! Great plant. Loves shade and likes its feet a bit damp although we grow some in full dry sun with no problems. It's a slug banquet so take what ever precautions you use against slugs.
  • There are no other leaves this is how I was given it, is it dying as it only has one leaf?
  • No its fine it will die back about now anyway then come back next year. The young shoots come up as spikes and then unfurl into the beautiful leaves.
  • Great thanks for the info 👍

Do protect it, maybe straight after Christmas so you don't forget and before the shoots start.
You can use crushed eggshells in a thick layer, coffee ground in a thick layer, sheeps wool pellets and more to stop the slugs and snails getting at it.
They are lovely plants and when thriving have stems of bluebell coloured flowers or white but the slugs just love them.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • Thanks for the info. Hopefully my resident hedgehog in my garden will keep the slugs at bay. Fingers crossed
  • Looks a little sad with its one leaf but will explode into life next year. Truly lovely plant and as twopenny has said a slug magnet!  Hope your hedgehog is hyper hungry 😹

Enjoy and maybe post a pic of it on here in all its glory next year for us?
Just my opinion, no offence 🐈

If you want to identify plants download an app called seek. How it works is that when you are in the app, you take a picture from your camera of the plant you want to find out about and it will tell you which species it belongs to. See what you think.

That's not as fun as playing detective on here though 😹

Hedgehogs are very hungry at the moment I'm happy to say. I think mine are inhabiting a stack of bramble cuttings I had to leave because of the very wet winter. Every cloud a silver lining. Now I don't have to clear the pile just in case :)
