    As a side note, can anyone recommend an inurance policy to cover the mains pipe under my property, just in case.  Seeing as it'll be 90 years old and probably just as delicate or crumbling as the one thats been leaking
    Have you looked/enquired about your existing building insurance to see if the pipe is covered?

    Severn Trent often send letters offering insurance for  emergency leaks etc on your share of the pipework.
