I'm pretty sure there's been a thread this year about a 0% purchases card that only applied to purchases in the first 60 or 90 days which would need to be treated like a BT card, as in avoiding further purchases.

That was MBNA, I believe, and it was very unusual in that respect. M&S doesn't have that restriction (nor do any others to the best of my knowledge).

That’s simply a reminder to check the TandCs and know what you have just signed up to. The advice to not mix spending with purchases is an attempt to simplify that for people and isn’t universally applicable.

Those ones you are describing are primarily BT cards that also give some purchase benefits. They aren’t specifically purchase cards. 

I’ve had very few purchase cards, and don’t generally have a purpose for them. I have an old Barclaycard which still gives 0.5% cash back and put most of my spending through that.
