easyJet "bad weather" flight delay

On the morning of our evening flight, easyJet delayed our flight from Funchal, Madeira back to the UK until the next day, a delay of 16 hours, and gave the new flight time a new flight number.
They cited bad weather as the cause, and on the "replacement" flight, the pilot did say that the Portuguese authorities had cancelled the flight the day before due to strong winds.
However, on the particular day in question, it was only easyJet who cancelled all of their flights from Funchal, and all other airlines continued to operate as normal.
Based on this, are we entitled to claim compensation?

Every airline has its own criteria in relation to winds. Maderia is notorious and subject to frequent problems. Unless the day was as calm as a millpond and there were no delays at all, you may have difficulties1

Authorities close air space and airports, they don’t cancel flights. Airlines cancel flights. Airlines need pilots with the right qualifications and experience to fly in and out of Funchal due to the well known windy conditions. I think easyJet are making it up in this instance and there’s other operational reasons for the cancellation.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0
