As others have said - don't waste your money/risk your life on a 50! Cars will force you into the gutter, especially on hills as your speed will reduce to about 25mph... it really isn't nice. Certainly, an old 2-stroke 50 will be faster (on the days that it decides to work) but they attract collectors' prices nowadays, and finding parts for some is nigh on impossible.

No, any 125 offers a far better riding experience. In your price range you will easily find a good Yamaha YBR125, which is a decently-made, reliable commuter. The Honda Varadero is also a good bet (if slightly pricier) and is a big beast for a 125, giving you a bit of extra presence on the road. The usual learner bike caveats apply - reject anything being sold by a yoof, especially if crash damage and non-standard parts are apparent. Try and find one being sold by a mature rider/commuter type, ideally with service history. 

Get a 125, get your CBT done and get out and get some experience. You never know, you might find you want to pass your test and get something bigger and better!
