I remember my Dad buying a Puch Monza (pre-77 speed restriction) which he let me have when I hit 16. It could get over 50 mph on the flat absolutely maxed out (stock with no 'adjustments') :)

...and Yamaha FS1E the "fizzie", a moterbike with pedals, the old ones used to go like stink for a 50 :)

I had a suzuki AP50, with an emaciated 7 stone me lying across the tank holding the clip-ons it would do 70 on the speedo (probably 56 in real life ;) )
I suspect that if I still had it, it would struggle to get to 30 with the considerably larger and less flexible me :)

Ah the good old days when bikes where cheap and fast and we rebuilt them every other weekend lol. I never started on a 50 but a lot of my pals did including Yamaha FS1E and Suzuki AP50. We all messed about with my RD125LC that much (different reeds and smaller rear sprocket it wouldn't set off without revving it to 10,000 haha. I loved the old 2 strokes and the best one i owned (albeit only for a few months because it scared me) was a Suzuki RGV500, what an absolute animal!!!!! Even though my current BMW is (on paper) a lot quicker just so smooth and the power linear unlike the 'grip for your life' power band of a 500 2 stroke!! wish I still had some of these bikes we're talking about worth an absolute fortune, 25K for a mint RGV500 these days.

a provisional license will cover you for 125s - basically it covers you as a learner on classes you're eligible for. I know 'coz I phoned DVLA to check on our youngest's before he got the 125.

hi, so am i right in thinking i can go buy a 50cc and stick l plates on it and learn to drive myself before i take the CBT tests etc ? or 125cc but mainly 50cc
    ---------------------------------------------
Also i have the brands to look for now thanks to you awesome peeps :) but i was hoping to buy a brand new bike but to recent money problems im looking for a 2nd hand one which is scary as i dont know that to look for at all incase i buy something that as something wrong and breaks in a week if you know what i mean!

maybe buy a 50cc 2nd hand to learn and get used to it etc and then buy a brand new 125cc scooter later :)

    NO!

You need to do your CBT first.

Why not just get an eBike?

Many 50cc scooters are pretty much disposable rubbish, priced down to a point at which they can be beaten to death by a 16yo and pretty much discarded on their 17th b'day when they can get a car or 125 licence.

It's not as if you're going to be covering large distances on one - the speed difference won't be particularly relevant, and you can treat one as a bicycle instead of having to treat it as a motorcycle.
    Ebikes are brilliant!
The only downside at the moment is they might be out of OPs budget (for something decent)

Halfords has 25 E-Bikes for under the £1400 budget (after the 10% off can get from various memberships). Some may be a bit crap but no worse than a Chinese scooter.

can anyone recommend one from personal experience within this price range please?
