Identify this Garden Tree, Can I cut it down?

Options
Hi all

We are buying a new house and it has this tree slap bang in the middle of the drive. If you look closely you can see that whatever it drips it has damaged the White car bonnet.  I would like to identify the tree to see if I can cut it down. As far as I know the house is not in a conservation area.
Thanks in advance all.

Can you cut it down? Yes. Anyone with a chain saw can cut a tree down.
May you cut it down? Maybe. It depends if it has a TPO on it. That's not necessarily related to the existence of a conservation area.

When you say it's in the middle of the drive, on your actual land or on the pavement outside your land? Former, yes, you can cut it down as long as it hasn't got a TPO on it, but to be honest, the most you'd ave to do would be to plant another one in it's place, the latter, no, you can't, it's not yours.
It's a fir tree of some kind and you'd be better off getting someone qualififed to do that because it looks quite big. Attacking it yourself with no idea of what you're doing is likely to result in jury to you or something else...

Difficult to say from the photo. It wouldn't enlarge clearly enough to see the 'leaves' or seeds.
An attractive looking tree though. Looks like a Cupressus of some sort and the problem is that they can weep sap which is sticky.
Take a photo and twig to show a tree nursery or post a photo of a twig showing the form of the green bits. And seeds or buds which are brown at this time of year, green in spring.
I agree, these are tricky trees to deal with. You need someone who can get up there and trim the branches off first then the trunk bit by bit. You need to decide if you want the stump ground out or if you will make a feature of it.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • TThanks all. It is on our land right in the middle of the drive. I would get a professional to tackle it.

Wow looks lovely close up, can't you just trim it and not cut it down? It's a whole eco system for all sorts of critters 😢

You can use it as an outside Xmas tree if you wanted (if you celebrate it ofc).  Would look wonderful. Perhaps you could park your car somewhere else just whilst it drops its sap but I'm not clued up on how long that is or if it's constantly 🤔
Just my opinion, no offence 🐈

Picea or Pinus, but as already said, difficult to tell from here - if it's a Cunninghamia ....leave it be, too special to get rid.
Infact, leave it be anyway 😉
