Transferring Boiler Warranty Between Homeowners

If you move into a new house and the previous homeowner has a boiler warranty (British Gas), does this automatically transfer over to the new homeowner i.e. is the warranty linked to the property rather than the owner?

Not automatically, no, as with any other sort of warranty it will depend on the terms of the warranty. Read it and all will be revealed.

I don't have a copy of the warranty as it's with the other homeowner. I just wanted to know (ideally from someone who has a British Gas boiler warranty) if it's something I need to get them to do for me before the sale completes.
  • Without seeing the terms of THAT boiler warranty there's no way of knowing.

And if only 1 week left on THAT warranty who cares?  Do you know and have proof current owner complied with his obligations (eg regular servicing)?

Just over 4 years remaining on a 5 year warranty, which is why I'm keen to get it transferred.

Like everything else, you ask to see it before you exchange. Otherwise you don't know what the warranty says (or whether it even exists!).

The best plan would be to ask the seller for a copy of the warranty.

A British Gas boiler warranty document on the internet suggests that it may be possible to transfer the warranty - but your seller might have a different warranty:

    Changing your address
If you move to a new home, you need to tell us as soon as possible. It may be possible to transfer your warranty to the new owner. You won’t be able to take your warranty with you to your new home.

I guess you could phone British Gas to get more info - there are phone numbers at the end of the linked doc.
  • Ask for a copy then read it.
.But I'd do a lot to avoid ever doing business with BG

Who can benefit from this warranty?
Nobody other than you can benefit from your warranty"

That would say to me that the warranty is not transferable on the sale of the property. But why not go straight to the horse's mouth?

The boiler extended warranty will be with the manufacturer, not the installer. What brand is it (possibly a BG branded boiler)?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It's a Worcester Bosch. You think the warranty would be with them and not British Gas? I thought maybe the boiler manufacturer would supply a standard 1 year warranty but the extended warranty would be with BG.
