Gas or electric combi boiler

Options
Hi all,
Im after some advice please
I live alone in a ground floor 2 bed/1 bath/1 shower Room flat.
Currently have a gas combi boiler in the airing cupboard. The boiler is 20 years old but still going strong. The flue runs through my bedroom and I’m trying to avoid getting inspection hatches installed in the bedroom for aesthetic reasons.

I’m about to refurbish the kitchen and thinking about potentially moving it to the kitchen, but I have limited space and will require a fair bit of hassle relocating it. The cost will be around £3,500 as I’ll potentially need to move the gas meter outside to make room for the boiler in the kitchen. I have a gas hob and prefer gas over electricity to heat the flat

Another option is to leave the boiler where it is, and when it conks out, replace it with an electric combi. This will eliminate the need for inspection hatches or moving the boiler. But I’m aware the cost of running this will be considerably more. I’m also not sure of a reliable make of electric boilers, and they seem to be more expensive to purchase.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar predicament or could shed any other view on things?

An electric combi or flow boiler is the ultimate in unbelievably expensive ways to produce heat and hot water, possibly only surpassed by burning real money in a fireplace
You will be swapping something that cots around 2.5p/kw with a unit that will cost you 12-15p/kwh - five times as much. Stay with gas
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • I've never heard of a electric combi boiler.. but I guess they exist. so I dunno. you would have a large electric bill.

Assuming you own the property, you'll seriously devalue it with an electric boiler: potential buyers will need a lot of persuading to commit to paying 12p per kWh for their heating and hot water instead of about 2p.

Usually only installed by cheapskate LL's who don't have to worry about the horrendous running costs.

Not even sure why you would consider switching to incredibly expensive to run electric heating when you have a gas supply to the property.

I wouldn’t go electric for the sake of a few hatches.
Can the boiler be moved to an outside wall anywhere?

Even when it will increase your heating and hot water bills by 250-300%, and devalue the property by £3K to 5K?

If you are happy to increase your heating and hot water bill by 3-4 times instead of having a few hatches go for it.

Our gas is 2.2p per kWh. Our electric is 13.8p per kWh.

You do the maths. It isn't rocket science to work out that it is going to cost a lot more to run electric heating.

Thought the use of the smirk would have fairly clearly indicated that I thought that this is amongst the most ridiculous reasons I'd ever heard of to be even considering doing this, guess I was mistaken.
