Thing is do you pick the cheapest being a not well known supplier, to one of the main ones. Cheaper is always best but when it comes to this I'm not sure about that.

"I currently have a British Gas smart meter, if I was to go with separate suppliers, do they need to install new meters or just give them meter readings?"

The meters won't be changed but will probably go dumb - get into the habit of reading monthly and keep records.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

To answer your question on tariffs changing, Yes they can, I called SSE a few weeks before my fixed tariff was due to end and got a quote for my THTC setup. I called about 3 weeks later and the tariff previously quoted was no longer available, as it had been on sale, and the cheapest tariff they offered was way more expensive. I remembered being told I could sign up to the tariff up until my end date and so they honoured it. If memory serves me right the difference was about £300.

The OP was using CEC "to find the cheapest", which sadly they hadn't.
