    Really?
Why don't you ask for us to pay for it as well?

Go to the LIBRARY and READ a GUIDE book.

Then when you have (finally) made up your mind come back and SEARCH this forum for advice, tips etc.
It's all here, you just have to PUT a LITTLE EFFORT IN.

Then, if you need specific help then ask

We all like to help, but your multiple requests take the biscuit!

If you don't have anything postitive to contribute why make the effort to lambast some one who is completely oblivious (admittedly) to anything to do with the US? If I knew anything about which routes to take and where to catch the scenery why would I be using this Einstein? I do intend to do my own research but assumed people who have experienced it will be able to provide me with some USEFUL pointers. I did however appreciate that I was asking a lot but some people on here are very HELPFUL unlike others.

Thanks for everyone else who have been very helpful though :-)

I am going to wait until some special offers during or after xmas and check out some routes in the mean time and shall get back to you guys for further advice if that is ok?

We have decided to fly back from Miami given it'll save us a drive back to New York, finally if anyone could suggest a scenic route between the two it would be greatly appreciated, thanks again.

  • Hello - we went Las Vegas - LA - Highway 101 - Santa Cruz - Yosemite - San Francisco. Took us 3 weeks & was absolutely amazing. Only booked hotels in LV & SF the rest we just took chances with on the way....
That was in October 05 & was pretty warm most of the time...

Also we were thinking of New York to Miami - how boring can this be or can we avoid the motorways and use more scenic routes?

I think you'd be mental to attempt that in 10 days minus flight times. I know it's only 1,300 miles (as the crow flies) but you'll be missing out on most things except driving.

Get more time, or set your sights lower.

I'm speaking as someone who did New Orleans - Key West - New Orleans - Las Vegas - New Orleans in 4 weeks with mammoth 20 hour driving sessions in between. I really regretted not having more time in most places, noticably the Grand Canyon. The joys of the US are the places you find by accident.

How about New Orleans - Miami?

The car delivery question - you wouldn't be allowed to use scenic back roads that took you out of your way - you have to take the direct, minimum mileage route, and take the minimum amount of time with only necessary overnight stops.

Having said that you can sometimes get cheap (not free) car hires at seasons when companies need a lot of cars relocating - in your case, although I don't know the exact dates, it would be cars being relocated north after the winter when they will have been at high demand in Florida. I would guess you would need to book direct with Hertz, Avis, etc. May could well be one of those times.
  • Blind, I'm too lazy to read your posts remember so I won't entertain you and bother checking how helpful you are...thanks anyway.

Sambee thanks for the help, did you find the journey in between New Orleans and Miami quite enjoyable then I take it?

I totally agree with you on the things one can find by accident having experienced that during other visits abroad.

The downside to that is mates want to see New York, I shall look at some internal flights or maybe some to New Orleans, thanks again, mate :-)

Well, maybe i'm biased (I did live there for a year) but New Orleans in the greatest city in the world bar none. New York to me is just somewhere that I can visit for a long weekend, but to me a road trip in the US is about driving in the Southern States. I would consider Miama / Key West - New Orleans, or a Louisiana / Miss / Memphis trip or NO - Las Vegas. And you can pick up Route 66 from Texas (Amarillo I believe), which surely is the most important component of any US road trip.
  • Nice one, Sam!
You're probably not THAT biased as one of my colleagues at work has said it's her favourite place too (New Orleans that is)

I didn't quite understand you're sentence on whether memphis and louisiana etc were no no's or yes's?(if that makes sense)! If you are recommending we avoid these places then I probably will as we want to keep them to a minimum or did you mean vegas was a no? 'Cos the later WOULD break my heart :-(

Have you done route 66? Is it over-rated?

    Thanks again

Sorry, by NO I meant New Orleans! All 3 trips are recommended. New Orleans -Vegas is a long drive along I10, but 'proper' road trip driving. You follow Route 66 for a lot of it (which is now just a small road with little significance), and mainly worth it for photo possibilities.

i'm going to backup blindman and agree with him.. you're asking us to plan your holiday, tell you what route to take when driving a car..

c'mon.. play around with maps.google.com put in a start and a finish city, and drag the blue line around. it'll tell you how many miles it is, how many hours it takes to drive...

we're here to help, but not to do everything, and i think that telling you a great company to get a car from, is more than enough help to start off with...

i help people out with prices on flights and hotels, but i don't book it for them, nor do i tell them where to go and what to do.. its your holiday, if you have no clue what to do, you might as well stay at home!
