Council Tax Figure Changes

Does anyone understand CT much?
My mum had her bill earlier in the year and because it wasn’t a high contribution, paid the whole bill in full.
Her account previously said £0 once paid.
Now it’s showing a minus figure of something like £130ish.
What does this mean?

Local authorities are making covod hardship payments on council tax.
I received a letter last week regarding this and the outcome was that this year's council tax contribution has been refunded.

Sounds like this may be the case for your mother

I had heard something like this and it makes sense.

I just checked and her contribution was 138.75 and the account is now showing -138.75

The email could of been better, it literally just said “an update has been made to your CT account”.

Compared to some councils that is clear. In many cases councils have an annoying habit of using internal codes or abbreviations - which is fine if you've worked in the job and know, but absolutely useless to anyone else.
You should contact them regarding the credit.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Yeah I rang earlier, there open until 1pm, but not the council tax team so I need to call back Tuesday.

You may be able to claim the refund back online.

if it’s the same as our council, payments were made to those claiming CTR of ‘up to £150’ off their council tax due to covid. As your mums liability was only £138.75 she will have been given £138.75 off her bill, and as she has paid it already, she now has the credit.

she can claim the money back if she wants to, or leave it on the account and she will probably have very little to pay next year when it carries over.

Unless your mom is really desperate, I don't see the need to claim this credit.
It stays on her account and is subtracted when the Council Tax is applied for 2021
  • Ah thanks to you both. I’ll give her a ring and let her know the options and then she can decide.

My council have given me a full refund but that money is already spent and gone so I prefer leave the money in my account for next year
