Have a squint at this article. It’s by no means comprehensive and bear in mind it’s a commercial site but some of the prices may (or maybe not!) surprise you.

I fully understand that there is no ‘one size fits all’ breakdown cover and there are any number of options available,...vehicle cover,.. personal cover...etc, but I reckon it’s not too difficult to beat AA/RAC prices, regardless of how your ‘breakdown cover’ is tailored.
I also understand that cutting ties with the two leviathans (AA & RAC) and moving to one of the ‘minnows’ can be a leap of faith. However, as the oft repeated phrase goes, “you pays yer money and you takes yer choice”.

Just had my Green Flag renewal in the post today and although I have had very good service from them for several years, I'm finding the cost spiralling.
My cover is for two times personal cover and was quoted £153, a massive increase on last years premium and when I rang and asked if they could offer a better deal I was told that the renewal price was fixed and they couldn't improve on it.
I had a look on a comparison site and find they are offering the exact same cover for £94. I checked in the small print to make sure the offer was open to new and existing clients and found that it was.
I'm tempted to take up the Green Flag offer on the comparison site because of the good service I've had over the years but with them not showing any inclination to substantially improve the renewal premium price, they have ended up losing me as a client.
I think the clincher is the fact that Green Flag uses the same contractors as the majority of the breakdown/recovery companies, so the actual service I get in future should be no better or worse than with Green Flag that with whatever company I eventually sign up with and most probably at half the cost of the premium Green Flag wanted this year.

If it's you plus spouse/partner then Autoaid are worth looking at. Not quite as cheap as they once were, but great value for a "couple" who both need cover to drive any car.I've been with them for quite a few years and always found them great when I've needed to use them. Like many companies they don't have their own fleet, they just use local contractors, but I've never found this to be a problem. One thing I do like is that they won't just take you to the nearest garage if they can't sort you out at the roadside - they'll take you anywhere in the mainland UK. Dead handy if you're miles away from home and want the car taking to your friendly local mechanic who you trust

Or can’t be fixed by end of day etc.
This is very important if you want towing home.
I broke down at a friends in Blackpool, but lived in Kent.
Wanted my mechanic to fix it.
So I waited in his nice warm home until 15.00pm and called the AA.
They arrived found the issue and said it can’t be fixed here a now.
It’s too late for a repair today, where were you headed.
Croydon, ok I will arrange transport.
Three recovery trucks and 14 hours later the car was at my mechanic’s.
The best thing was he needed instructions to my garage which was handy as it just happened to pass my house on the way. So dropped off family.
Then me on way back which was nice.
I think it help buying him McDonalds at a rest stop.0 -
I've had decent enough service from Green flag. They sent a local agent out each time.
My membership is through the caravan club, so the price is fixed each year.0
