Who pays childcare?!

I've just started working full time, my ex Partner has 2 full time jobs too. He says I should claim 85%nursety fees from government, as all he has to give me is what child maintenance say. He's calculated this at £270. The fees are £1150 and I've been told by job Center I COULD claim up to £650. That's still £500 short. £230 from me his whole CM payment goes on fees. Not actually feeding clothing or looking after our child... which I felt CM was for.
Not only that but how can 2 working adults possibly 4K pm between them avoid paying full fees just because he doesn't want to?

Nursery fees are by negotiation. The only thing ex needs to pay by law is the CM at the relevant amount.2

Childcare can be claimed as part of Universal Credit, which is up to 85%. https://www.gov.uk/help-with-childcare-costs/universal-creditWhether you'll qualify for UC will totally depend on your circumstances. Use a benefits calculator to check entitlement.https://www.entitledto.co.uk/benefits-calculator/Intro/Home?cid=86ed0033-1dac-4a54-a895-2ae42511b729 You don't count your partner earnings, if you don't live together. A claim for UC will end any tax credits you may already be receiving.Or there's other options here https://www.entitledto.co.uk/help/childcare-cost

Just to add that whatever CM you receive is ignored when calculating entitlement to UC (or other means-tested benefits).Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0

Thankyou, that's insane, I can't believe the non resident doesnt have to pay childcare- especially when they work- and have more opportunity to work as they don't have the child often.Madness.0

Why would your ex have to pay childcare when the child lives with you? You already receive CM from your ex.

I want him to pay half the nursery fees and us not claim from an already over exhausted system.0

Currently you have a £450 childcare bill. How you choose to pay that is up to you.1
