I heard an advert on radio last week I think where someone was saying that buying with a debit cards gives you the same rights as a credit card - not sure what they mean but check with your debit card people your rights to cancel
Then ask the company for the details where your deposit was non refudnable.
Then take it from there.
As you said if it is non refudnable the onus is on them to make it clear that it is not. I always ask but in the scheme of things we can forget and imo it is up to the seller to tell you - possibly contact citizen advice as well then go in armed with all the info.0 -

But she should use a debit card so she will have cold hard evidence whether it would work.2

Martin disagrees with claiming back on debit cards, section 75 only applies to (most) credit card payments.
