DH has managed to get tar on the sleeve of his cashmere jumper. Does anyone have any idea of the best way to remove it - the jumper is 100% cashmere, and the tar isn't in lumps, but rubbed into the wool (if you know what I mean)

I think if it was me I wouldnt mess with it and take it to a dry cleaners. Cashmere jumpers especially 100% arent cheap and I wouldnt want to ruin it more.
Good Luck

The best way to remove the tar is to gently rub a little lard into it, keep dabbing with a bit of kitchen roll to get the tar out. When you have as much as you can get out, put washing up liquid on and tap into the wool to neutralise the grease. Wash as normal then.
I've saved many of OH''s clothes this way (not cashmere though!)

Thanks, I took Pen Pins advice and took it to the cleaners - even they aren't sure they can get it off.
Cheap jumpers for work from now on :rolleyes:You're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -
I`ve got tar out of clothes before with WD40 but not sure about cashmere.0

Assuming the dry cleaners couldn't guarantee to remove it ( and would guarantee that whatever they try wouldn't set it solid), I would try softening it with cooking oil (corn oil) and dab away with kitchen paper.
Please note, I've never used this on clothing but remembered this as something I'd read about removing beach tar from childrens clothes. I used it on a saw blade coated with bitumen and soaking the blade in oil softened and removed it easilly although it did take a while.Aiming for a Champagne Lifestyle on a Lemonade Budget

I would suggest Oil of Eucalyptus which you can get from chemists. You get a tiny bottle and you`ll recognize the smell! Will remove a cold at the same time! This will not entrench the stain . Dab liberally over the marks and then wash gently in lukewarm water. Let us know how you geton.0

I wonder whether that would work for bicycle chain grease marks too? I have asked about this before in another post but the best reply was to wear cycle clips - i do wear them, honestly! but I still, somehow, accidentally, get the stuff everywhere.... And do you mean by eucalyptus oil the 'essential oil', or is it something else?"Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
Hi Champys,
I buy Eucalyptus oil wherever I can find it as not all chemists sell it. I`ve just checked my bottle and it just says Eucalyptus oil 25ml with a CARE label at the top. From the original tip it says,
" Eucalptus oil( from chemists) never seems to figure in stain- removing manuals yet for me it removes: chewing gum and sticky tape, tar from skin, hair and paws, lipstick from washable fabrics(though test first on delicates) it dissolves other, heavier oil stains making them easier to wash out. Being volatile, it evaporates quickly and rarely leaves a mark( If it does, the mark quickly washes out) Used sparingly one 25 ml bottle will last a year or more"
Actually I have seen chemists sell this at a lower price when` out of date`making it even more money saving!
Hope this helps, pm me if you need more help.0 -
