These items have failed after 63k miles and slightly outside the warranty that you had on the vehicle.

If Volvo contributed 40%, that means you paid 60% so equates to an expected component life of 100k miles of which you had 60% use and pay 60%.
What component life would you expect?
If the items failed at, say, 85k miles, would you have accepted the full cost falls to you?

The solution from Volvo seems equitable.
Bearing in mind that main dealer price to fix it is likely twice what it could be done for, anything below a 50% contribution and it would probably be cheaper sticking two fingers up to Volvo and getting it done elsewhere.

I think mde_2s gripe is that when you buy a highly priced quality Chinese car, the starter should last a lot longer than 63,000 miles, and certainly shouldn't take the engine out when it does fail (after a more reasonable 250,000 miles or so :) )

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Start stop could be the blame for this failure as it does wear the ring gear more quickly.

I had the opposite with Volvo, mine was a MY15 D3 engine which has EGR/soot issues. They thought they could get away without Adblue but couldnt so changed in 2017.

I had a EGR cooler mod after 2 years, then at 5 years, the emap sensor pipe blocked - was found during service checks - this is about 3 inches long and costs £210. Volvo paid.
Going home the EGR valve failed - Volvo paid. This was at 55k miles

I had kept the Volvo service schedule up to date.

Went to petrol this year as I knew it would soot up again - This is a common fault with 2014-2017 D3/D4 engines.

It might be worth registering with the Volvo Owners forum and posting here
    https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=201

There seem to be some very knowledgable Volvo people posting in that forum.
