Hi.  We moved to the US 10 years ago but went ahead and claimed ppi through a UK ppi company.   I was successful with capital one and my husband with MBNA.   The only problem is my husband no longer has a UK bank account,  MBNA sent the refund cheque to us and we deposited it in our US Bank account,  the cheque was sent back by western union as they were unwilling to negotiate any transactions with MBNA?? As stupid as it sounds.   We contacted MBNA and asked if the cheque could be reissued in usd or could they transfer the money to a us bank account.   They are willing to do neither.   So we now have no way of cashing this cheque.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MBNA are not a bank.   So, it would not be MBNA that they would be looking to negotiate the transaction with.  It would be MBNA's bankers.

I suspect your bank has misunderstood.  Perhaps they looked up MBNA as the bank (and couldnt find it) rather than MBNA's bankers (which is who they should be using).

Thank you,  that makes more sense,  although the ppi company we've used has also been in touch with mbna and have offered no resolution.   How would I find out who their bankers are?.  I doubt that even if I was able to provide this information to the western union associate that they would retake the cheque at this point.   When they sent the cheque back to us I noticed they'd stamped it on the back,  so I suspect we may have to get mbna to cancel this and reissue another one.

By looking at the cheque.   Even when the firm uses personalised cheques (as in their own branding), the name of the bank they use still appears on it.    A check of the sort-code would also tell you the bank.

The back of the cheque is blank page that is can have lots of things written on it.  It is the front of the cheque that matters.

I would suggest that as MBNA are now part of Lloyds Banking group the cheque would be drawn on Lloyds Bank Head Office sort code 30-00-00 or City office 30-00-02

Lloyds Bank certainly have agency links with a host of U.S. banks.

This is interesting, from the internet:

    "Which bank owns MBNA?
MBNA was founded in 1982 as part of Maryland National Bank. 'MBNA' originally stood for 'Maryland Bank National Association'. Since 1993 MBNA has been based in Chester, in the north of England. MBNA proudly joined the Lloyds Banking Group in 2017."

I've learned something today, thank you. I never knew that MBNA originated in Maryland. USA. Where you moved to - how strange that they can't sort this out. It's almost as if they don't want you to have the money. Or is that just my cynicism?

[P.S. just use google, and you can find out just about anything!]

I'm having trouble replying to individual comments,  so I'm hoping that those that have commented see this:
The cheque has no other bank name other than mbna,  the ppi company have just emailed me to say they have asked mbna to reissue the cheque with an "issuing" bank name on it.  Mbna have refused.   So we are now left with a cheque worth over 1,100 gbp and can't do anything with it.

What is the sort code on the cheque?  (this is not personalised data so you can tell us that).  We can then look at the sort code directory and see what bank it is.

the ppi company have just emailed me to say they have asked mbna to reissue the cheque with an "issuing" bank name on it.

That is not how it works.  So, that was inevitable.
