Hi Dave, is there any chance you could give me a rough outline of the area you found those houses?

    try this right move search
Some will be park homes or building plots
    189 3 beds upto £160k
307 SSTC so you have missed out on a few already.

if you use the draw facility you can do all of Cornwall Devon and include bits of somerset in a single search.

If you are looking at Cornwall avoid any places near the coast, prices in some of the inland slightly less desirable areas such as Liskeard, St. Austell, Redruth or Camborne are much cheaper.

Thanks all! South Somerset wasn't somewhere i'd thought about! Our main requirement is somewhere we can bring up a family and own a few golden retrievers  :D

We're about 5 hours up north from all these areas so when it comes to really viewing we'd have to take a week and book our viewings as much as we can, not knowing any of these areas and only being early 20's it's a scary move, so area is a really big criteria for me.

Does anyone know how likely it is that we'd get a house with monthly mortgage payments of no more than £600 or £650 max. I like a more modern looking house such as new builds but i'm willing to put in a lot of work to make whatever house I do buy my home.
  • We spent years looking at Cornwall. Properties do exist in the county for c.£160k for a three bed semi, however, they're usually ex-council in and around St Austell, Bodmin or the less attractive parts of Redruth, Camborne or Hayle etc. Saying that, its not uncommon to find a 2 bed semi or the odd detached (requiring work) near Saltash and further up the Tamar for around £160k.

The issue we had was distance, you pretty much had to buy on spec, not sight. Even with family down there who you know and trust, they've shown us places they thought we'd like, but in reality have hated. A month ago, there 'was' some new 2 bed semis in Helston going for around £175k with parking that looked pretty good. They'd been on the market for months with no interest, then within a day of the stamp duty announcement they went under offer in hours.

The only way I'd consider moving to the West Country now is to sell, and then rent down there to be first of the blocks and keep an eye on the sale.

That's what people should usually do if they don't know an area intimately. It's not good to find major down-sides after you move in.

Your wishes are contradictory. New builds carry a premium price and they are the last places that will have space for good sized dogs, gardens on them being small and their floor areas less generous.

  • Somerset-wise, i was saying south and thinking south west Somerset - more along the lines of Chard, edge of Blackdown Hills, Wellington, Dulverton .......
    Just extra places to ponder.

I think Dulverton and Exmoor borders would be pricey

Not checked prices but seeing Chard reminded me of Axminster and Honiton as possibles?

Err....probably not. Axminster is quite desirable these days, and Honiton even more so. Lots of trendy boutiques, antiques and independents in Honiton and both are right next to AONBs.

Take a look at Barnstaple should be able to just get what you want in budget there nice area we looked a couple months ago. Prices seem to have fallen a bit there over the last couple years and the markets very slow in comparison to South Devon which in some areas is on fire
