Laptop not working after Windows 10 Update

I would be grateful for any help you can suggest.  My Acer Aspire 5542 (about 10yo) had a recent large Windows 10 Update and now when it starts keeps going round in a loop saying it has to restart.  A blue screen appears saying it is collecting information, has to restart and saying it is a stop code and Kernel Date Inpage error.  I know it is an old laptop and did have rather a lot on it but would like to know if this is it for my laptop or there is any way I can get it going again (not least to salvage items I haven't backed up this month!)
Many thanks

  • Can you get to the boot menu when it is restarting by hitting F8 on startup?
If you can - can you boot into safe mode?

The best / safest way to get the data is likely take the hard drive out, put it in a caddy and connect it to another computer.  Then do a fresh clean install on the laptop.

No unfortunately not.  It immediately says Press F2 for setup and I can do that and get a list of options but I don't know if that will help.  It just ignores the F8 being pressed and keeps going on the original loop with the message about Kernel Data Inpage error.

This is not uncommon on older kit although more often the upgrade winds back sucessfully if it fails
You may very well find that a new install of windows 10 on a laptop that is that old will not work properly

Following on what has been suggested by Molerat, it's a good time to swap the original storage drive for a much more efficient solid state model. The swap takes around five minutes. A clean install of Windows 10 to the SSD perhaps twenty minutes.
You can place the old HDD into a specially made caddy which turns it into external storage, which you can then use to retrieve the data stored within.
Total cost for both items, from around £25.
Benefit being that your laptop will be faster and more efficient than ever before.
Easy job for you to complete. The only caveat being that you'll need an existing PC in order to be able to create the installation media for Windows 10 on the SSD.
Is it the model with the AMD Athlon II Dual-Core M300 CPU?

Many thanks for all the suggestions.  I think I will now look at replacing the old laptop and then can have a go at retrieving the data as per the advice.  Most of the important stuff was backed up but I did take my off the ball a bit lately so that is another lesson learned!

Why replace it if it still works? Just change the drive as suggested.

Not sure how important the data is. If you have access to another computer I would get a USB pen/drive and Google Ubuntu bootable drive, follow the instructions to create it, plug in to your failed laptop - switch it on but press F2 and it should allow you to change settings/boot order - allow it to boot to ubuntu operating system via your newly created pen drive. From here you have a few choices.

    1. back up your data
    2. use your laptop as is , bypassing failing operating system

    3. test the hardware to see what's failed

That's a great suggestion.  If I can get that to work at least I can copy and back up anything I haven't already to be on the safe side which would stop me worrying and doing anything hasty.
The laptop will go into F2 and the setup and I can see a list of boot options so presumably it would then add the flash drive to the list.  The laptop has been through Windows 7, 8 and 10 with no problem but I have read the latest W10 update was quite big so that might have been part of the problem as I had quite a lot on it.

Personally, I'd just boot into a usb version of linux, copy the data off and then re-install windows and copy the data back.
