Your situation clearly is more complicated which is why I believe you need the services of Citizens Advice. CA has an Extra Help Unit which has direct access to Energy CEOs’ senior staff. In your situation, this would be my preferred route. Complaints tend to get dealt with by junior staff who don’t always respond as you might expect. The same can be said for the Ombudsman.

I would tend to agree, do not just rely on the 'back-billing' rules, they only really help when you have registered with a supplier and they have subsequently failed to bill you accurately and in a timely manner, that is not the case here.

I would argue that this is the case here.  When we moved into our new home, we were informed that our gas supplier was 'First Utility'.  They failed to set up an account when we queried what was happening, failed to bill us, failed to even contact us again, and therefore failed to allow us to pay for our gas despite our many attempts to do so.
    This then continued with EOn.
I'm not sure how much more we need to have been failed?
The supplier has blocked payment not us.  We have actively tried to pay.
The fact is you have used all the gas that's on the meter so it's now how much you may get away not paying when all the hassle you and others have been through to rectify it over the years.

The advice of contacting Citizens Advice is a good one.
Well yes of course we have because nobody has allowed us to have an account set up.
We have been obstructed from paying for that gas by the lack of any account or bills despite constant requests.
You say how much we “get away with” now.   Somebody else mentioned we “benefitted” from this.
I can assure you we would have much rather had a functioning account from day one and that’s all we ever asked for and tried to accomplish.
None of this has ever worked in our favour unless of course we had set out to freeload!?

Is it 8 years or 10 years? I think you mention 8 years in your first post then 2012 in another?

What is your meter reading total now after 8 or 10 years?

You mentioned Eon have billed you for roughly half. So what are they suggesting you pay?

All of this will give an idea of the worse case scenario and then hopefully common sense will kick in with the current registered supplier and a compromise.

Do you have the money available to pay the worst outcome (ie pay for all the gas you have used)?

I mention 8 years in the first post because that was posted in 2020.
    It is now 10 years.

The meter reading was approx. 9000 in 2020 and is now approx. 10950.

I’ve said that EOn NEXT not EOn (they’re different companies) have estimated my meter reading at approx. half the true reading, not billed me half - nobody knows/has calculated what the amount owing is or to who it is owed.

EON NEXT have only billed me from March 2022 when they were passed my supply from EOn, even though EOn have told me they never set up an account for me during the period they were listed as my suppliers (Sept 2019-March 2022) despite my requests.  I have no idea where EON NEXT’s opening reading of approx. 5000 came from - I’m still waiting for the answer to that question from EOn NEXT.

So I remain in the dark at the moment.  I’ve just sent a comprehensive list of dealings from our side re. all our efforts up to now to the Complaints Department of EON NEXT as EON have been unable to help and have said I need to contact them.

With regard to common sense kicking in I won’t hold my breath because that hasn’t happened in 10 years.  It’s driving me nuts.

I now await EOn NEXT’s response
    And a response from

to find out the date my gas meter was first registered on the national database.

I don’t know because I don’t know how much is owing over a period of 10 years, different rates, etc. or to who it is owed.
Anyway whether I was or was not able to pay a whole 10 years’ gas back-payments should make no difference at all to where I stand with regard to my rights, meeting the back-billing rule, etc. with my case.

Raise a Support Request with XOSERVE. You might get a response.

I’ve had a response from XOSERVE.  I asked them to confirm what date my meter was first registered on the national database.  Their reply:

”your gas meter was initially installed on 30/9/2019”.  That’s the same month EOn took over the supply and 7 years after we originally moved into the house.
I’ve no idea how they came to be the supplier for a meter not known on the database?
    So confusing.

Good news is the most you owe is from 20/09/2019 unless the previous suppliers come knocking on the door at a later date.

I forget do you have your readings from that date to confirm start date with EON in your documents? That way at least there is a starting point for the EON complaint.

Good news is the most you owe is from 20/09/2009 unless the previous suppliers come knocking on the door at a later date.

I think you mean 2019! Any bill from 2009 would be partly timed-out under the Statute of Limitations.
