Payment from Vodafone years after we left them

I have changed my bank account since I left Vodafone over five years ago. I note that it was only about a year ago that it was removed as active from my credit record. If they want to give me some money back, I hope they send a letter because the bank account is gone.

Someone (possibly external auditors) has probably had a look through some old data and realised that this money is sitting there and realised that it needs to go back to its rightful owners.

I'm fairly sure that when your contract ended you overpaid but didn't realise and it's now being put right.

A number of years ago they changed their billing system.  I gather it didn't go well, I was in the middle of leaving and so saw the worst of it (random bills that needed correcting, etc).  This may be a final hangup of that after someone with more time and calculators than most of us realised they'd not dotted an "I" somewhere?

This mentions the fine, albeit talks mostly about PAYG. I was definitely contract.
