Sorry to be that person but what has a council estate being close got to do with anything? Sounds similar to ours. It never crossed my mind that being on a corner would make us vulnerable for burglary. We did have some trellis added to the height of the wall to make it taller, but this was to protect my daughters Guinean pigs during the day as I was worried a fox might visit.RelievedSheff said:We bought a new build corner plot last year but it is tucked away in a quiet part of the development. We are on a very private and quiet estate though and there is very little through traffic or footfall past the house. At the moment there is more traffic than there will be when finished as the end of the road isn't open to traffic just yet. It will hopefully be open in a few months.My concern has been graffiti, seems a long wall which you can access and walk on by, is an easy target. However the wall is ‘fake’ Cotswold stone, so not smooth render. Perhaps it’s less appealing 🤔.0 -

Better to be safe.Well in my opinion a lot of people on council estates probably don’t work or are from rough families as nobody would choose to live next door to people on the social welfare would they.Im buying an expensive house so I feel in a position to want to chose my neighbours and children my kids will grow up with. Also I suspect the schools there will be filled with better category of children from stable homes.We’ve decided not to go with it anyway as we feel being on the corner would always bother us.Thanks for all input.0 -

Please don’t let me put you off by my bad experience. The area was a good area and the house was average for the town I was in. If you feel the corner is tucked away and it’s not where all pedestrians will start and you take everything else into consideration then go for it. Also you might never have a problem.I am in an expensive desirable area now but even now not too far will be not such an expensive less desirable area and people can come to see what they can take from elsewhere and even buying this house I just made sure I will not buy where pedestrian have side or back view of my back garden. I know you can get problem neighbours but at least I will know who to confront.I will now not buy a house where I have a foot path on the sides or back. Buglers do go to other areas to “shop around”.So you say it’s a new development which means there is really room for future developments nearby? Schools being built etc.Honestly though we all know the advantages of a corner plot but just make sure it’s “tucked away” enough to avoid nuisance observers later. Graffiti has never crossed our mind as being a problem. But then again we are tucked away in the estate on a quiet residential street so I doubt the idiots would walk this way in to find a wall to paint. Plus we have a garden area in front of the wall to separate it from the road and footpath so people are less likely to walk across that to get to the wall.
I don't see the corner plots here as being at any more risk of burglary then any of the other plots on the estate. The layouts of modern estates are designed to prove difficult for burglers to target specific properties by the Secure by Design guidelines. Adjacent properties provide surveillance to discourage burglary.1 -
You are right even if the neighbourhood is good you being in the corner means you are the most vulnerable position in the whole development! Better to be safe! You just want to be able to sleep at night without wondering what will happen. Neighbourhoods change in character from time to time so good to choose your location well.luke105 said:GraceD_17 said:

I have been burgled twice, both times house in the middle of the street not on the corner. This was before I got a dog. Next door burgled, again not on a corner the burglars jumped over a side gate. Another house on the street burgled via the side gate, the same day my dog went nuts barking in the middle of the afternoon. Suspect burglars were sizing up the house.Unless you live in a terrace it is pretty easy for a burglar get round the back.
Living in an expensive area makes burglary more likely - you are more likely to have good stuff and burglars travel0 -
A dense, thorny hedge will provide much greater security than the wall. It will take time to grow, though if you have space to plant it outside the wall then you can have the best of both worlds.
Separate issue I know, but have these been started/built? A number of large development in my area were given permission on the proviso that amenities were built to service the estates (inc schools, a medical centre and shops). The houses were competed and sold (getting on for 10 years ago), the additional infrastructure never materialised. The council may have learned a lesson though as another development is in hold because the developer has tried to renegotiate similar obligations after recieving planning permission under condition of providing a school and shops.
