EasyJet - Southend Closure

Options

We had a number of flights booked for next year leaving from Southend. With the recent news we are now awaiting communication from them as to what our options are. Our first flight being March 2021 so I'm not expecting to be contacted any time soon. I understand a transfer, voucher or full refund will be offered. If we decide to transfer to another airport, I assume that the transfer fee will be waivered, but any difference in price of the fares we would have to make up. Is this correct? I can't seem to find any information anywhere. For one particular flight to Faro in August 2021 we have paid £1100 for 4 adults and 2 children (including seats and luggage), if we were to transfer to Luton or Gatwick there is an increase of £1300. My in-laws seem to think we wouldn't have to pay this increase but I'm not sure. I am more inclined to book new flights with Ryanair, still leaving from Southend and request a refund once we are given our options by EasyJet.

Is anyone able to offer some advice please?

Thank you

I would assume most flights will just be binned (a few flights may fly into Southend and return to a different base, and those flights will no doubt continue, it will depend on the route), and refunds will be given. The fact that flights from other airports involving the same airline or others cost more dont come into the equation for Easyjet but maybe that is something your travel insurance would cover.

First you need to establish if the flights you are on are 100% operated by the Southend base and not a different one. Do Easyjet have a Faro base for instance? A clue is the departure time: if its very early morning then it will be a Southend base flight.

Easyjet have made it clear they will not be flying to or from Southend at all, unlike the other two bases that will still have flights. I would be tempted to ask them to rebook you on Ryanair from Southend if that is more convenient, but be aware if Ryanair cancels the flight subsequently, you may be back to square one. Ryanair admitted a couple of days ago that they have just cancelled 20% of their planned flying for September and October due to lack of demand, so there are no guarantees at all in the current environment
  • I have Easyjet flights from Southend but with the associated return to Gatwick.  Position regarding refunds of Southend flights is clear, but can't get any advice regarding return flights as Easyjet as not able to get through to them.  Really want a refund for return flights.  Any suggestions welcome please?

Is the return flight (to LGW) on the same booking as the outbound (from SEN)?

If under the same booking reference number number then I wouldn’t expect you would have an issue with seeking a refund on both flight segments.

If booked separately and you have two booking references then it might not be as straight forward. In which case you may need to call EasyJet and politely request the return segment into LGW is cancelled and refunded given the outbound from SEN is not going to operate.  If booked separately then they would be under no obligation to refund the operating flight but I suspect EasyJet will be sympathetic and do so.
