Vodafone termination fee

So I’m with Vodafone via one com( not sure how I got it again) but I asked for an upgrade before 24months via Vodafone chat and they gave me one along with a new plan and cost per month. Sadly the phone was faulty so I returned the handset and decided I was going to cancel.
I phoned up thinking I was within my right to cancel in the cooling off period to be told that I can cancel the upgrade but I’d be reverted back to my previous agreement which was 36month term even though they upgraded me with a new plan and contract!!
If I wanted to leave with my number I’d have to pay a termination fee which is from now until September 2021!!
I assumed I was on a new contract so had this right to change networks.
Is there anything I can do to not pay this and finally leave this network.

So you've still more than a year to go before your original minimum contract term ends? In which case why would you think you can leave without paying an early termination fee?

If it’s onecom then you’re on a business contract?1

Yes but I didn’t realise this at the time when I upgraded. I thought the new contract would take over the old plan regardless and in a way cancel out the old one.stragglebod said:So you've still more than a year to go before your original minimum contract term ends? Doesn't work like that, you signed up for a certain period so by taking out a new contract/upgrade i presume you signed up for another 2-3 years.
Either get them to swap the faulty phone or revert back to your old mobile and see out the contract.
you may get a bit of redress (bill credit) if you complain enough and esculate your complaint as you wasted a certain amount of time setting up new phone etc etc1 -
Yes, but if it as that easy everyone would take out new contracts to replace their old ones, cancel them and get shiny new £1000+ phones for next to nothing.slimjim1009 said:

Look at it this way, at least you're no worse off than when you started.1 -
I didn’t realise that’s all.dcfc67 said:Doesn't work like that, you signed up for a certain period so by taking out a new contract/upgrade i presume you signed up for another 2-3 years.

Multiply months left by monthly fee and deduct the vat to get your termination charge.slimjim1009 said:
