Wedding October 2020 help

we are so stuck and don’t know what to do x wedding is planned for 30th October and we had booked a venue for 60 people and 30 bedrooms.

Currently we don’t know what to do. Do we send invites in the hope that the government changes guidelines? X

wanting advice please

  • Personally I would hope for the best but plan for the worst.
By that I mean I would draw up my list of 30 people that I'd want there if the guidelines stayed the same but let the remaining 30 people know that if you can have them there, you'd love for them to be there....under the current circumstances I would accept that if I was in the 2nd trance of guests.
However you do need to have a word with your venue about the rooms and potentially changing the number of guests and see if they can accommodate this flexibility.

Would your guests wish to stay? The Wedding guidance only covers the ceremony itself.

You beat me to it! :)
I'll add that its a massiv risk all round as you could get a local lock-dwon and rightly so the gov has put the fines up for venues that cheat the sytem to 10k.
If I was in your shoes, just do a very basic wedding ie you, and your nearst few people and have the big party once this is more under control

Divide your guests into must have and would like to have and plan accordingly. I'm sure given the situation the would all understand. As for staying, speak to your guests, see what they would like to do, everyone is grown up they can make sensible decisions for themselves, as they will understand their own tolerance to risk. There's so little of the virus around at the moment the risks are quite small, but it's difficult to know how things might change over the next couple of month.

Have you got exclusive use of the hotel?

If not, where do the other guests go to eat or drink.  Separate bar or restaurant?

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Exclusive use or not, there is a big chance of a local lockdown. Personally i would not risk it.

yes we have exclusive use but IF guests are allowed to stay but don’t want to, I wonder where we would stand financially? It is part of the package we paid for so it the rooms are available and able to be used, I think the hotel might hold out 😢

also at what point would you decide to go ahead with 30? Or do we wait longer ?

This is why you need to talk to people. Talk to those who you would want to be there &, as pdel has said, everyone has their own level of risk and ask them whether they would want to stay.

Then you need to talk to the hotel - they may hold you to paying for the 30 rooms or, they may agree to you only paying for rooms that you use provided you agree to lose the exclusive use element.

As for when you decide to go ahead, I'd look at the cost implications of not & then decide if I was happy to pay them. However it also depends on how important getting married is for you now. Personally I would but that's me.

Just talk to your guests and see how they feel. Please also ignore those who say you might end up causing a local lockdown, that just nonsense.

If you have exclusive use of the hotel then i personally wouldn't think it a problem for the wedding to go ahead and i would have thought the majority of guests would still want to go, but just speak to them and make sure all the people most important to you are still happy to attend.

At the end of the day the wedding is just one big expensive show off party and in the future you will at least have something a bit different to tell people about your wedding day when it took place during the "great pandemic of 2020" and will be a bit more interesting that a standard wedding day story.
