Try TPFT and FC with a big excess, when I did a quote the other day the FC came out a little cheaper.

Update: I added myself as a named driver and the Fiat 500 has come down to £739 now which seems reasonable, especially as I know who will be paying for it - me!0

In my experience as long as you don't go for anything crazy the "insurance group" doesn't make a huge amount of difference. Age, location, and driving history are the big factors. Insurance for a new 17 year old driver is going to be expensive. (I hope your son understands he's privileged to have a car at that age - I couldn't afford it until my late 20s).0

Both were with £500 excess and no named drivers. That is interesting as the Fiat 500 should be quite a higher group I would have thought.

TPFT = Third Party Fire & Theft
FC = Fully Comprehensive

Go to one of those insurance sites that puts a black box in your car that monitors your driving/etc. Caution advised as if there is a crash the police can use that as evidence.
Best to get a Ka, third part only limited miles and as others said depends on where you live.
Free tip - Buy the car for cash, pay cash for the road tax, insurance etc as there will be repairs, maintenance and fuel costs and you dont want to be in debt at 17.

Like it’s already been mentioned, the vehicle group doesn’t really get taken into consideration with most insurers. It’s info like driver info and amount of claims on a type of vehicle etc etc.Sounds like you’ve found a solution with the fiat 500, and at £700ish I personally think for a 17year olds insurance that is a good price.Wouldn’t recommend putting a huge excess on there to try and bring premiums down, because in the long run that doesn’t work, if you have an accident you’ll need to find that money from somewhere. TPFT also doesn’t effect the price much and if there’s an accident you’ll be left with a damaged vehicle, so again, personally would not recommend that.Happy driving to your son0
