Hi. My home (3 bedroomed) has been supplied with water by Yorkshire Water ever since the company was founded. Since 2004 I have teen the sole occupant. I've fairly recently asked for a water meter fitted, but since YW concluded one cannot be fitted I'm now on an assessed charge account. Presumably I am on a single person occupancy discount, but the letter from YW does not contain that phrase. I think the single occupancy discount came in, in 2016. Possibly the same as assessed charge account, not sure. The date of the start of the assessed charge account is 26 May 2020. My question is: Given that I have been the sole occupier since 2004, does the rules allow for the assessed charge account to be backtracked to 2016?  Please let me know if the single occupancy discount is different from the assessment charge. Thank you. Rich

    From Yorkshire Water website
'The Assessed Charge applies to customers who've requested a water meter but for practical reasons, we've been unable to fit one.
The charge is based upon typical water usage for the type of property. Single occupiers may be eligible for the single occupier tariff.'
A customer needs to apply for a meter before being placed on an Assessed charge and it is usually applied from the date of that application with no backdating beyond that date.
The single occupancy charge is simply a lower assessed charge.
  • Thank for the insight. It's a pity I did not apply for a meter earlier, given that no backdating is allowed. So, in theory, If YW have not taken into consideration that one person lives in the property, my charge could be lower than the current assessed charge.  I will contact YW and raise the issue of single occupancy, and see what gives.
