Oil companies have achieved total vertical integration, i.e. they own all the stages of exploration, extraction, transport, refining, distribution and retailing. They are also multi-nationals. Therefore they can attribute profit to any stage/tax jurisdiction they choose. They could lose money on the retail side of the business in Britain and simultaneously make profits from exploration rigs registered in the Cayman Islands. If the respective tax regimes changed the oil companies could, with the stroke of a pen, lose money on exploration but make all their profit on distribution in the Isle of Man.0
