Have you looked on the back page?
Bet the OP is pleased with such stellar advice.

I also once put a deposit down for the same reason.  £1,000 to reserve it, if for any reason I didn't want it, money back.  It was incredibly hard to actually get the cash back out of the salesman - he tried everything.  But I did eventually get it back (and learnt a lesson).

It's a normal practice so, if they refuse, I'd tell them you'll give them 7 days to return your money.  If they don't, letter before action and small claims court.  Don't be bullied.

Honestly, it'd have to be a pretty bloody special car for me to be giving them hundreds - let alone a grand - on a promise before even seeing the damn thing.

The only way these shysters will stop pulling these farces is if people refuse to give them their business, and TELL THEM why.

Thank you for the advice it's much appreciated and I'm glad I'm not the only one to fall for this.

Ask for a meeting with both the dealer principal and the sales rep present. See if he can look you in the eye and lie about what he said to you.

Some people still seem to think cars are like unicorns.

Never ever leave a deposit unless it is to go and get the balance of the money.
