I'm not suggesting tax increases work on a linear level and I am aware of the Laffer Curve.
However if you made the starting rate 33% for instance rather than 20% (and noting it comes in immediately, i.e. no tax free allowance so from the first £1 of earned income) this would raise considerable additional tax revenue. The 40% could increase although i've never been a fan of a rate of 50% or more where you works much/more for the state than yourself. We already have that anomaly on the 100k-125k where effectively it is a 62% tax rate.
All of that said, as mentioned I don't think there is a desire to make any dramatic changes by this government or probably past or future one's.0 -
