My question is whether or not I owe her this money.
When she moved in I didn’t want to take any money from her. My lodger at the time was paying £300 a month in lodgings which is where she got the figure from.
Now that the relationship is over and she moved out, can she reasonably ask for this money back.
And no, I working overtime is not an option. My current credits/finances are non of her concern as we have been apart for 5 months now.
    Hope that clarifies things.
    No. You dont.

You agreed its £300 a month and thats that. Doesnt matter what the cost is to you.

Equally if the bills were more, it would be your problem, not hers.

I am confused by the numbers.
If the bills etc are £525 per month then 50% of that would be £262.50 IS that just bills or did it include any element for 'rent' ?
If she actually paid £300 a month then the 'over payment ' would be £37.50 per month which is £693 over 18 months. This is also the figure if she paid a one off lump sum of £5,400 (£300 x 18)

If she paid an upfront lump sum of £4,500 off your debts then that equates to £250 a month so she was underpaying by £12.50 a month if the plan was to pay half the bills, and would owe you £225. If she paid you £300 a month for the final 5 months then if the agreement was 509% of the bills then you owe her £187.50.

But if the agreement was that she cleared your credit card and then paid nothing for 18 months, and then started paying and paid £300 a month, then the fact that those numbers were a bit different to half the bills is irrelevant - she paid what the two of you had agreed on.

I think in your position I would go back to her and say that you don't believe that you owe her anything but that if she thinks anything is owning, to set out in writing what she ways the agreement was, what she says she actually paid in relation to the agreement, and how she has calculated her figures. Also, why if she though it was incorrect she didn't raise it at any time in the 2 years it was going on.

  • Morally?  Possibly some, but - and it's a real life but - where (other than with parents) can you pay £300/month for lodgings and all bills these days?  Whether you wanted the money or not, she still had to live somewhere.  She lived with you.  I'd say that was reasonable.  My perspective (and that's all it is), no she isn't entitled to it - or at best £675 if she actually paid £4500 or £300/month for 18 months when the bills equated to £262.50 as a share.
