  • I was POA for my Mother and when her house sold (she went into a nursing home) I invested £130,000 in NS&I in her name.  It took them so long to do all the checks on my POA that the account never got opened before Mum passed away.  Obviously my POA is no longer valid although I am an Executor, I have nothing from NS&I to show where the money is and although I have told them of the death and sent everything to them, they still have not opened or closed this account and we are waiting for the money to be distributed according to the Will.  For a Government body they are disgustingly slow and inept.

Is your experience of government departments typically characterised by speed of action and competence?  Lucky you.... ;)

I have found dealings with Govt Depts to be as "hit and miss" as many other types of organisation : some Govt Depts and QUANGOs are excellent in terms of speed, service and efficiency. Some, most notably HMRC, are always notoriously awful. In my years of dealing with NS&I , I have found them to be pretty good in most respects, otherwise I would not have stayed with them so long.
But I have found this year that even the most trusted organisations have been thrown into chaos by Covid staff absences and changes in work practices, yes including NS&I.  But I have tried to bear in mind the awful strain on all companies, all supermarkets, all banks, all Govt Depts -----though things seem to be improving now ( keeping fingers crossed against a second wave of Covid in the winter)

In view of the many different threads on MSE Forums about NS&I, I thought the following link might be of some help, particularly the names and telephone numbers of "media advisers" who might be able to help answer questions which so many new customers seem to have----perhaps their personal input may save enquirers' time and doubts ( I have not used the phone service , so please don't assume I am recommending it as the answer to everything or anything relating to NS&I-----but in view of the wide interest I thought it might be of help to the many who seem to need it.

I was just scratching around trying any avenue that might lead to answers to the many questions that have been posed in many threads on this Forum in recent weeks/months. I'll keep on looking----because it is obvious that there must be ( well-hidden, admittedly) direct help numbers in existence somewhere in NS&I or The Treasury.  Or perhaps most new savers with NS&I are running out of questions by now  :)
  • Does the £85,000 financial guarantee cover each separate investment with NS&I (e.g. Premium Bonds, Income Bonds etc)?  OR, does it apply to the entire amount invested with NS&I (that is to say, all accounts combined)?

I have LPOA for my mother who has the £50,000 maximum in Premium Bonds + £35,000 in Income Bonds. Can I safely invest further In Income Bonds without losing financial protection?

I have read on this forum that for NS&I the guarantee is "far above" the £85,000. If this is so, what is the limit?
