unfortunately my finance director is not so understanding.  He's set a budget of 15 to 20 so the corolla at 23 is a no go.  He's suggested I go for the Octavia estate.  Cheaper P11D price so the difference in BIK is a couple hundred a yeah but the advisory fuel rate is annoying as hell.  No 1.6 diesel comes close to the "Applied MPG" of 62.6 mpg as far as I'm aware.

Is the budget on purchase cost, list price, or monthly lease?
When I got the Auris, it started out of budget so I found a deal in budget and presented that.

purchase cost needs to be sub 20k.  When he found out an Octavia could be had for 15k to 18k, the decision was kinda made.  I tested the Octavia 1.6 TDI with the 7 speed DSG auto box.  Easy to drive and comfortable, but of a drone when accelerating hard but smooth.

One thing I didn't like was the lag pulling away from a junction.  Stopped at a roundabout, engine auto stop-start, went to move away and easy 2 to 3 second delay before moving.  Not easy entering a roundabout like that, turned the auto start-stop off, got a bit better but still a small delay.  Think I could get used to it though or just stick it in sport mode if need be at junctions.

I am sure you should be able to get a Corolla under £20k.

I've got an Octavia vRS estate and love everything about it....apart from the stop-start function which is a pain in the !!!!!! and kicks in at the most unhelpful times (like slowing down at a junction prior to turning)

found one for 19k near me but an Octavia is around 16k.  He likes the Octavia and it's big enough for the work we do, so unless I find something cheaper than 16k, he's not going to approve it.  Definitely puts a vRS out of the question even though I'd love one!

Test drove it again and it wasn't anywhere as bad as last time with the start-stop turned off.  I think not having a clutch on the biting point to immediately take off when you hit the gas is probably what's catching me out.  With a little practice, I should be able to get used to it.  Failing that, there's sport mode / semi-manual and in extreme cases, a DSG tune (unlikely I'll do that on a company car though)

That sounds like a fault ... it shouldn't kick in until the vehicle is in neutral. (Although I'll accept that a DSG box version may react differently - I've never driven one).

Most autos with S/S it activates when you have had your foot firmly on the brake pedal for a few seconds

Whilst in motion? I've not found that and sounds like a bad idea

    That's why I was puzzled.
