Trying to join VM now - with installation in October...

Hi all

My broadband is currently with BT - paying about £38pm (£20 + line rental ) for 74mb broadband (I don't use my phone - only broadband). 74mb is sufficient.

My contract is up in early October and I cannot see BT getting any cheaper for either what I'm paying or better. I'm therefore tempted by the VM offer for 100mb for £24pm with the £75 voucher. However - that offer ends on Monday.

So - my question is - if I went through with the order, do you think I could pick the latest installation date and then possibly keep pushing it until early October, when I can leave BT?

Appreciate there may be a similar VM offer at the time, but this looks good and I don't want to let it slip.

Yes I will be asking them too. Was just wondering if anyone had ever been in a similar scenario.

Yes I can get VM at the property.
  • If youre not bothered about a phone line why not just sign up with them and pick the most distant date for installation. As the Virgin use their own infrastructure would it really matter if there was an overlap of services for a few weeks and you had to pay for the extra months Virgin ..if its its  £24 surely its worth it to get the deal.
It would be a different case if you were wanting to keep the phone number or signing up with some one who used the same infrastucture as BT.

Since VM runs on a totally different network, commissioning VM will not remove you from BT-you have to give notice to BT separately. This means that you can't port your number from BT to VM but, since you don't use the phone service, that is presumably not an issue for you?
So I'd just order VM before the deadline, and give BT your notice once out of minimum term.
NB: you can leave BT tomorrow if you want, but they'll hit you with an ETC.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Hi all

Thanks for your comments. As mentioned above, I only use the broadband - only got LR with BT as I had to so don't care about the phone. The deal with VM is broadband only in any case.

I've now spoken with VM and confirmed:

    • I can place an order now and delay installation until October (pick the latest installation date and then keep pushing it back)
    • There are no cancellation fees if I cancel before installation (as set up is free)

Hopefully that helps someone if they're ever in a similar situation.
