Flight cancelled, insurance wont pay out on villa
Hi
I was hoping someone would have some knowledge/advice?
We booked sperate flights and villa for spain. I have travelinsurance with Nationwide Flexplus insurance
Easyjet cancelled flight week before when due out to Spain for 11th July. easyjet full refund no problems.
Claimed on insurance for villa in which i had paid half. Approx £900
Just recieved letter from insurance saying they are not paying out on the grounds that it was safe to travel and I could have stayed at my accommodation.
Do I have a case here or not? It seems a bit harsh to me when flight was cancelled so close to departure. After all, isnt this one the reasons for insurance ultimately?
As always appreciate any advice as this forum have been so helpful in the past
Thanks

Were restrictions in place at the time in terms of FCO advice against travel etc?
If not, ultimately losses need to be mitigated and they could argue it would have been cheaper for you to book flights out there with another airline; and chances are they'd have been quite cheap given how few people are travelling at the moment.0 -
There were no restrictions at time of booking villa in december
There were fairly limited flights available that matched the dates i had booked unless i was prepared to travel to another part of the UK for a flight, is that reasonable? i am amazed they have refused my claim on the bases i could have still travelled and I am surprised at Nationwide who i have always considered reputable0 -
Nationwide is only the name on the front, it's administered and underwritten bu uk insurance. I gave up the flexplus last year but before downgrading my account made a claim last summer, and whilst most of the claim got paid it was a drawn out affair. Made a complaint and the compensation they offered slightly exceeded the underpayment on the actual claim so got there in the end.
Make a complaint and if necessary escalate to the ombundsman, decision seems unfair to me on the basis of what you have said.1 -

Were there any restrictions at the time you were supposed to be going on holiday?
If your flight is cancelled then under normal circumstances the airline is still responsible for getting you to your destination. Rather than just accepting a refund, you could/should have asked them to put you on an alternative flight, if necessary also arranging transport from your home airport to to wherever the new flight began.

The problem is you chose to have a refund. Your rights as it was under 14 days notice were https://www.caa.co.uk/Passengers/Resolving-travel-problems/Delays-cancellations/Cancellations/Medium-haul-cancellations/
Depending on the reason for the cancellation its possible you can also claim 400 Euros per person compensation0 -
What about when you were supposed to travel?emuze999 said:There were no restrictions at time of booking villa in december
Insurance won't pay out just cause a flight was cancelled if it was safe to still travel if that is what you are meaning.
