Amazon warehouse exists pretty much to churn out returns and damaged items.
Many warehouse buyer reports would show they do very little testing/checking on returns that get put on sale in the warehouse
I use Amazon Warehouse quite a lot to buy on. It's mostly pretty good. "Like new" and "very good" are often just items with a damaged box that gets thrown away anyway. My worst purchase was a vacuum cleaner, listed as "like new" it was full of dust, quite awful.
I doubt they ever go into the boxes if they come back sealed. They do dispose of quite a lot of returns, I know one auction house that handles a lot of their stuff, I think they sell it on by the pallet.

yeah I use warehouse a lot. However as you say it can be a mixed bag.
Most stuff is as described but I have had missing items, undeclared damage etc.
Bought a Playstation VR set that was supposed to be complete with games but was the bare kit. Haggled a good discount with Amazon CS though.
Most recent was a 'like new' motherboard that had components snapped off the motherboard, thermal paste smeared over it and missing accessories in the box!

On a side note, this is how people get banned. Amazon has a bit of a generous returns policy so people think that was easy I will do it again and push their luck to far.

I think you mean for too many returns. My returns so far are 2 for 132 orders.this year Thats a lot of returns for me.
Had the padlock and lunch bag had proper dimension listed then I wouldnt have ordered either.

I've just had this "no need to return" from an Amazon purchase that I wanted to return under my 14-day option.
I'm pleased to have received a refund without any bother but I also feel rather guilty now at having a product that I don't want and uncomfortable at this just becoming more electronic waste straight to landfill.
It was an accessory for my phone that was not compatible with the phone so I could now hold on to the item until, one day, presumably, I'll get a phone that the accessory works with.  But that now kind of feels like stealing.

As it stands know you can control where it ends up. Knowing how Amazon works, if they had accepted it back it still may have ended up in landfill.
If you're on Facebook you could offer it on a local group for someone who might need/want it.
Amazon make a business decision on returns, it's often cheaper to refund without a return than pay for the return and then open it, sort it, check it and restock it.
