Best place to get money exchnged

Options
Going to Turkey in 23 days booked it last min madness maybe but I needed a holiday after how poor 2020 had been so me and partner are just gunna risk it.
I personally have not been on holiday since 2005 so I went into the post office and asked how to change currency to lira.
Does any one have any advice on where to secure the best rates ideally on the High St as wanting to take around £1000 in cash and put another £500 on a travel card.
Thanks in advance!

The money changers there will give better rates than you could possibly get in the UK. And of course the best rates are from an ATM.

Yep - and if you have a forex free credit card, even better.

Moving cash around the world is expensive, and money-changers pass on this cost in the exchange rates they offer you.

Please read the section of this site about the most cards for foreign currency, because using the wrong card in an ATM can prove extremely expensive.

Check the Visa requirements - admittedly 5 years ago, it was a crisp £10 note. A £20 for 2 people was  not acceptable!
Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!

If you have Euro’s take those as they are widely accepted (preferred in many places). If not I would just take £Sterling and change to Turkish Lira when out there. The exchange rate will typically be much better than if you but Lira here from the Post Office or a Bureau de Change.

Definitely just take cash and change it out there. You can change it anywhere. If you choose a bank you'll need your passport. Since the PTT (Turkish Post Office) was privatised they don't open such long hours so, in the evenings, use shops. They have boards outside with that day's exchange rate and they're competitive. It often doesn't pay to change too much at once as the rate can change daily.
I envy you, we missed our Turkish holiday in June. ☹️

It must be 10 years since I last changed money in advance of a trip. Either just use an ATM (with the right plastic) or take sterling to change there (but not in the airport on arrival)
As a rule of thumb it will always be cheaper to buy currency in a country which has a lot of it. Turkey has a lot more supply of Turkish Lira than the UK does.

Just be warned than in the more tourist areas of Turkey you will see some things priced in Euro or Sterling. It is usually wise to avoid these as the exchange rate will always be in their interest rather than yours.
