PayPal - new scam?

Options
I had an email this morning, addressed to me by name. It wanted me to confirm my security phone number, which I thought odd. The sender address seemed real but I was still suspicious. Contacting PayPal from another device I established they had sent no such email. I have sent it to spoof@paypal.com and deleted it but worrying it was addressed to me by name.

You've used your name with that email address on another site which has been hacked (along with others) and the spammed all of those knowing some use PayPal (probably)

I got the same email, a quick google (I didn't click the link) found this:

    https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/psd2-new

    And this:
    https://www.paypal.com/uk/smarthelp/home

    Also:
    https://www.paypal.com/uk/smarthelp/article/what-are-the-payment-services-directives-and-strong-customer-authentication-faq4202

Which all seem to verify that the email did in fact come from PayPal, all specifically mentioned keeping mobile number up to date as per the email.

    I got the same email.
It asked for my phone number.
I never follow links in emails, I'll make sure my Paypal details are up to date.

What does the OP mean by "security phone number"?
  • PayPal is going to implement Two Factor Authorisation. The email is legit, and is asking you to log into your account and ensure that you have a mobile or home number on your account.

Cheers as I too wondered if it was BS but a bit of research then read this - mine was addressed via my first name

I got the same email.  I logged into Paypal (not via the link), as I had to do something else, but couldn't find anywhere that you update your phone number.

Seems the idea is that when you buy something using paypal, they send a code to your phone which you then input in order to complete the transaction.

Mr S had the option of giving more than one number, so he listed mine as well.  Paypal is in his name, but I tend to use it the most - so hopefully I'll be able to select my number to receive the code.

Don't know if it will apply to all transactions, or just those over a certain limit.

Yes, it will be a faff - but blame the scammers, without whom there wouldn't be a need for additional security protocols.
