Self-Employment Income Support Scheme

On January 30/31st I tried unsuccessfully to fill in my online Tax return. I have videos and emails of my trying to do this. I was finally able to submit my return at the end of April after lots of backwards and forwarding with the online support (all logged in my paper trail). HMRC sent me a letter wavering my late submission fine and apologised for the inconvenience. I then appealed my Self - Employment income support scheme application as I was not able to apply due to the late filing of my tax return. The system was amended and I was then able to apply. I received a letter dated 8th of July saying my application was successful and a grant had been awarded, they just required me to call and give my bank details. I did this and then waited 2 more weeks and when nothing had gone into my account I called. The advisor said the appeal had been once again refused, she wrote a letter to the "investigator" outlining my situation and reassured me the money would be in my account. I today received a letter saying I would not be receiving a grant because I could have supplied a paper return before the cut off date. If this had been suggested to me I would have done it straight away (in February), but as I was in communication with the HMRC on-line support team it didn't occur to me to do so. Can anyone suggest what I can do next? The latest letter says "there is no appeal to this decision"  what steps would you take to take the matter further? Thanks in advance.

Probably best to contact your MP and ask for their assistance

As you didn't submit your tax return by the extended deadline then it doesn't matter what you do you won't qualify for any SEISS. HMRC or your local MP will not be able to change the rules to suit you.

Usually, I would agree with you but if HMRC have previously accepted it's their fault that this the return wasn't filled in time and then issued a letter saying they eligible for the first SEISS grant as a result then it deserves to be looked at again - and the MP route is the best way to do this

This is the first exception I have seen to not filing tax return on time where I do agree that the OP has a genuine case to be taken up that HMRC are in the wrong.  Assuming, of course, the OP's report is the full and accurate position.
  • Is the SEISS still only going to be 40% now that we have gone into another lockdown for 4 weeks?

No change announced yet, but there may be one coming.  So far, as CJRS evolved, SEISS always evolved similarly.  See what develops over the coming week.

It has gone up to 80%, the same as the first payment, not 55%.

No, they have increased November's rate to about 80%, by increasing the 3 month percentage for November to January from 40% to 55%.
