Should I be cautious of oil central heating?

  • We've got oil and I really quite like it. I like the fact that you pay for the oil before you use it, you can monitor prices and have lots of choice. I always order with boiler Juice as they are the cheapest, I'm also able to go through Quidco and get another £5-7 back per order.
We only use quite little oil a year so can go 10-12 months before ordering.
We did have to replace our oil tank this year, we went from plastic to a metal tank (both double bunded) metal was much cheaper than another plastic tank.
I'd look at the position of the tank, and which way it would flow if there was to be a leak ours would run down the garden away from the house and not cause any issues, whereas running towards the house would cause more damage and expense

We moved from storage heaters to oil. I did like my storage heaters so had never bothered getting GCH fitted. Quick reply to your question is no, oil is nothing to worry about. I like the fact I can buy it when prices are low (large tank). It works in pretty much exactly the same way as GCH anyway just with a pipe from the oil tank rather than a gas pipe from the mains.

It could it could be argued that you should be wary of any form of fossil fuel heating.  According to this report, new gas boilers will be banned within 5 years: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-47559920
The writing is on the wall for coal, oil, gas - all fossil fuels.  The only uncertainty is the timescale it will be forced through.
Make of that what you will.
That proposal is solely for new homes. There are no near-term plans to ban replacing existing fossil fuel boilers.
