Cancelled flight

Options
We recently checked in to our Easy jet flight to Jersey (a month before we were due to travel.) Then, 2 weeks before our departure we got an email saying our flight was cancelled. We've now arrived on Jersey having had a long drive and an expensive ferry trip.
Any idea what our position is regarding our cancelled flight? I know we can get the price of our flights back but can we ask for our other additional travel costs as well?

No, just the price of the flights. It will have been your decision alone to continue the trip and funding the journey over land and sea.

maybe a question for your travel insurance

    Thanks for replies.
We do have travel insurance (multi-trip annual policy from October last year.)
However I'd really rather avoid claiming on that as (to date) our annual insurance is really cheap.
However I'm genuinely surprised that Easyjet can cancel our flights (once we've checked in) and leave us to pick up a reasonably large additional bill and a huge amount of hassle.

So hypothetically speaking if we had arrived at the airport, had a few drinks in the airport lounge and then were just about to walk onto the plane and were suddenly told the flight was cancelled would it be the same?
Would we be liable for the costs of getting a taxi home? And then a taxi back to the airport once able to drive?  And then alternative means of transport to get to our eventual destination? What is the relevant consumer legislation regarding this?
Our flights have been booked for about 9 months and we were then cancelled at 2 weeks notice - I would have thought there would be rules to stop airlines doing this.

Compensation may be payable if the cancellation takes place within 14 days of the flight but outside that period, a refund is all you are due

Under normal circumstances there is a right to re-routing as an alternative to a refund of your fare. You should contact the airline and ask to be moved to a different flight (operated by another carrier if necessary) rather than simply making your own travel arrangements and expecting them to pay. Of course, if you made repeated attempts to contact them but could not get a response then it would be reasonable to make your own arrangements and charge them the additional costs.
