They stopped them ages ago.  Sky+HD boxes fall into Freesat from Sky mode when your subscription lapses.  SkyQ probably does as well but you have to send the equipment back anyway.
Thought it was only Virgin where the eqpt  was rented and needed returning

    Not any more.
All Sky Q boxes have to be returned to Sky when you cancel/end your subscription with them.
It has been like that for Sky Q since it started.
Sky HD + boxes are yours to keep from the end of the min term contract.

Sky Q boxes are rented and have to be returned if the contract ceases, if they go faulty at any time while in contract they will be replaced free by Sky if they are not returned they will charge for them.

    From Sky website :-

The charge depends on what equipment you haven’t returned to us:
    • Sky Q 1TB box - £100
    • Sky Q 2TB box - £140
    • Sky Q Mini box - £50
    • Sky Q Hub/Sky Broadband Hub - £30
    • Sky Broadband Booster - £45

You’ll be charged for every piece of equipment you don't return. For example, if you didn't return a Sky Q 2TB box, two Sky Q Mini boxes and a Sky Q Hub, you would be charged £270 in total.
